The PM program aims to empower couples to connect through the skill of caring touch. It promotes massage as a preventative coping method. It consists of a one-hour class on a weekly basis. The programme also teaches couples how to communicate their needs and desires.
In the first study, couples who received massages reported significantly improved physical and emotional wellbeing, as well as improved perceived stress. The relationship satisfaction score did not increase significantly over the pre-course assessment. The data was analyzed with mixed ANOVAs and Bonferroni corrected paired sample T-tests.
While previous studies have explored the effects of lay massage on physical and emotional wellbeing, this study is the first to look at the effects of a short, educational massage program on both the giver and receiver of the treatment. The data indicate that massage may improve the self-confidence of both the giver and the receiver. Massage can also be used to relieve pain and soothe depression.

Future studies will be conducted to explore the positive effects of mutual self regulation massage as a preventative coping strategy.

Both partners experienced a significant improvement in overall well being after the massage. The effect was sustained for a period of three weeks. It was also noted that the participants’ perceived stress level significantly reduced after the massage.
Participants completed eight questionnaires that assessed their wellbeing. The questionnaires included the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, the Rhode Island Stress and Coping Inventory and the Positive Feelings Questionnaire (PFQ), and a Relationship Satisfaction Scale.
Mixed ANOVAs were used to analyze the data. The interaction between the treatment and treatment groups was tested using Bonferroni corrected paired-sample T-tests.
Participants showed significant increases in self-efficacy and perceived stress. This may be related to the PM skills being taught. Nearly all participants agreed to continue receiving and giving massages after the course. The participants also intended to tell their friends and family about the programme.

Participants reported feeling more positive and able to cope with life after the PM program. Participants also stated that they would recommend PM to their family and friends. They also indicated that they would continue to exchange messages with one another.
Participants reported that their perceived stress levels had reduced significantly. Participants also reported feeling better about their relationships. There was no evidence to show that these benefits were related to relationship satisfaction. This is a significant factor to consider as it could suggest that future studies should examine the effects of mutual massages on relationship satisfaction.
Although the study included only a few participants, the results are intriguing. This study shows that massage can improve a couple’s well-being and reduce their stress and anxiety.
